If you’re a newcomer to this site, I would recommend you read that first. I already gave a pretty good overview of “toku” in general when I started my articles on Garo: Makai no Hana. “Wait a second, what’s this ‘tokusatsu’ you’re talking about?”
Instead, I want to give readers a chance to find an intro themselves, by presenting series I think are good representations of the various franchises, and some reasons to check them out. This isn’t an article to examine the reasons why, to point fingers, or lament the lack of official support for accessible subs or localizations. I find it odd that while anime and manga have achieved so much attention and representation over here in the United States and other English-speaking areas, toku hasn’t found the same kind of success. I’ve fallen deeply in love with the genre in the past couple years I’ve been watching, and want to increase its visibility. So I’ve decided to make this series of articles giving brief explanations of some of my favorite installments from the different franchises, and information about where to access them. But now that I’ve been writing these articles for almost a year, I’ve noticed people wanting to get into different toku series, but unsure where to start. Pretty big understatement, right? To tell you the truth, there’s a whole bunch of series from the different franchises I enjoy, and I just don’t have enough time to exhaustively discuss all of them.
